Cholesterol: Top 5 Foods to Lower Your Numbers

It has been some time that I have talked about diet and cholesterol.  And, the main reason for my Open Heart Surgery was blockage - I had three areas 60%, 70% & 99%!!!  I found this article at the Mayo Clinic -

Cholesterol: Top 5 foods to lower your numbers

1. Oatmeal, oat bran and high-fiber foods

Oatmeal contains soluble fiber, which reduces your low-density lipoprotein (LDL), the "bad" cholesterol. Soluble fiber is also found in such foods as kidney beans, apples, pears, barley and prunes.
Soluble fiber can reduce the absorption of cholesterol into your bloodstream. Five to 10 grams or more of soluble fiber a day decreases your total and LDL cholesterol. Eating 1 1/2 cups of cooked oatmeal provides 6 grams of fiber. If you add fruit, such as bananas, you'll add about 4 more grams of fiber. To mix it up a little, try steel-cut oatmeal or cold cereal made with oatmeal or oat bran.

2. Fish and omega-3 fatty acids

Eating fatty fish can be heart-healthy because of its high levels of omega-3 fatty acids, which can reduce your blood pressure and risk of developing blood clots. In people who have already had heart attacks, fish oil — or omega-3 fatty acids — reduces the risk of sudden death.
Doctors recommend eating at least two servings of fish a week. The highest levels of omega-3 fatty acids are in:
  • Mackerel
  • Lake trout
  • Herring
  • Sardines
  • Albacore tuna
  • Salmon
  • Halibut
You should bake or grill the fish to avoid adding unhealthy fats. If you don't like fish, you can also get small amounts of omega-3 fatty acids from foods like ground flaxseed or canola oil.

3. Walnuts, almonds and other nuts

Walnuts, almonds and other nuts can reduce blood cholesterol. Rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids, walnuts also help keep blood vessels healthy.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, eating about a handful (1.5 ounces, or 42.5 grams) a day of most nuts, such as almonds, hazelnuts, peanuts, pecans, some pine nuts, pistachio nuts and walnuts, may reduce your risk of heart disease. Just make sure the nuts you eat aren't salted or coated with sugar.
All nuts are high in calories, so a handful will do. To avoid eating too many nuts and gaining weight, replace foods high in saturated fat with nuts. For example, instead of using cheese, meat or croutons in your salad, add a handful of walnuts or almonds.

4. Olive oil

Olive oil contains a potent mix of antioxidants that can lower your "bad" (LDL) cholesterol but leave your "good" (HDL) cholesterol untouched.
The Food and Drug Administration recommends using about 2 tablespoons (23 grams) of olive oil a day in place of other fats in your diet to get its heart-healthy benefits. To add olive oil to your diet, you can saute vegetables in it, add it to a marinade, or mix it with vinegar as a salad dressing. You can also use olive oil as a substitute for butter when basting meat or as a dip for bread. Olive oil is high in calories, so don't eat more than the recommended amount.
The cholesterol-lowering effects of olive oil are even greater if you choose extra-virgin olive oil, meaning the oil is less processed and contains more heart-healthy antioxidants. But keep in mind that "light" olive oils are usually more processed than extra-virgin or virgin olive oils and are lighter in color, not fat or calories.

5. Foods with added plant sterols or stanols

Foods are now available that have been fortified with sterols or stanols — substances found in plants that help block the absorption of cholesterol.
Margarines, orange juice and yogurt drinks with added plant sterols can help reduce LDL cholesterol by more than 10 percent. The amount of daily plant sterols needed for results is at least 2 grams — which equals about two 8-ounce (237-milliliter) servings of plant sterol-fortified orange juice a day.
Plant sterols or stanols in fortified foods don't appear to affect levels of triglycerides or of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), the "good" cholesterol.

Starting Week Two of Imdur

The science experiment continues.  I am starting my second week of 30 mg of Imdur and the reduced Metoprolol of 50 mg.  Here is my data:

6:40 AM - took Imdur on empty stomach
7:20 AM - had my oatmeal & other meds

7:40 AM - started my walk (HR at 77)
Got HR to 104 with no PVC's on my heart rate monitor.  I could have had some, but the monitor did not go whacky & did not feel like I had a lot of PVC's.
8:17 AM finished walk
I also lifted weights & did my situps & pushups.
Headache started around 11 AM & finished around 2:30 PM.  The headache was not very severe.

Experimenting With My Blog

People Beware!  I'm experimenting with "Ads" on my blog.  Since I am recently retired, I thought I would try to earn "tons" of money to supplement my retirement!  So, I need your input & I will track this  for my readers.

1 - Will I make money?

2 - Does this detract from my blog? (If so, let me know!)

3 - Will this lead to me being harassed by email or other methods?

Stay tuned & I will track the move into taking my blog to the other side!

The Franklin Institute - The Heart

As a kid I remember an elementary school visit from Cornwall Elementary School to the Franklin Institute.  The highlight of the trip was walking through the "GIANT" human heart & hearing the heart beat as you walked through the path that the blood takes through the heart.  Little did I know, that heart & my future would press me into learning much more about the human heart about 50 years later!

I just discovered the website for the Franklin Institute and the Human Heart Exhibit!

28 Weeks After Open Heart Surgery

The distance between Open Heart Surgery and Recovery is increasing!  After 28 weeks (over 6 months), most of the reading that I did on the recovery process is true - 6 months & you will see a change!  And I do!  My walking is improving.  Remember back in November?  I had trouble walking up stairs, or walking around the block!  Now I am walking over 30-45 minutes, with no problem.  And with my new meds, I seem to be able to take hills without having my heart monitor go crazy!  As a review, here are my heart meds:

Aspirin EC Tab                           81 mg                   1 per day
Lipitor(Atorvastatin)                  40 mg                    1 per day
Amlodipine                                   5 mg                   1 per day
Plavix(Clipidorel Bisulfate)       75 mg                    1 per day
Metoprolol(Lopressor, Toprol)   50 mg                   1 per day
Isosorbide (Imdur or Isotrate)     30 mg                   1 per day

The change last week was going from 100 mg of Metoprolol to 50 mg.  This is what they call a beta blocker, it reduces your blood pressure.  The only thing it did was make me feel tired and I still had the PVC's, but they happened at a lower heart rate.  And the new drug, Imdur.  This is a nitrate, it opens my blood vessels for and increases blood & oxygen throughout the body.  So, when I do my workout, my heart rate monitor does not indicate PVC's - but I still think I feel them.

I am planning on adding to my workouts starting next week.  So far, I will get the heart rate to 95-98 when I am walking uphills.  The plan next week will be to add 20 seconds of jogging on the flats.  So, for a 30-45 minute workout, I will add jogging 8-10 times.  I will also continue light weight lifying & pushups & situps.

The Imdur is still giving me headaches, but they seem to be decreasing in length.  Right now, I am getting the headaches about 3 hours after I take the Imdur and last for 4-5 hours.  Each day, I have been taking the drug 7 days, the length of the head aches decreasing in time and severity.

Come on jogging!!!!

Still Working on New Med - Imdur

I'm still trying to find a way to get past the headaches while using the new medicine - Imdur.  Today I took the drug at 6:30 AM.  I took the 30 mg pill on an empty stomach with 4 ounces of water as they suggest.  Here were the results:

6:30 AM - took Imdur
7:30 AM - ate breakfast - 3 pancakes & glass of OJ
7:45 AM to 8:20 walked - had no noticeable PVC's - got heart rate to 93
9:30 AM left for church
12:00 Noon home from church
12:10 - Headache started to become more severe
12:20 - Had lunch
4:15 Headache was gone

So, the headache lasted about 4 hours & I took two Advil around 2:30 PM.
